The novel begins with Violet Ambrose who at age 16 has discovered a new attraction to Jay Heaton her old grammar school friend. However, Violet is also dealing with the fact that she has the ability to feel the presence of dead bodies, specifically those who are casualties of murder.
Violet-s power to sense the dead has been with her since she was a young child. Furthermore, she can sense the impressions of the victims on the killers. Violet has never really tried to use her ability, other than to locate gifts that her cat has left for her, such as unfortunate dead birds, and once she was able to reunite the parents of a dead 8-year-old girl with their daughter-s body. Violet has always felt the support of her parents along with Jay when it came to her unique talent. Unfortunately, a serial killer has arrived to her little town and is taking the lives of young girls.
The echoes of these unfortunate souls begin to haunt Violet daily and she starts to realize that she might be the only person with the power to stop the monster. Luckily, her uncle is the town-s sheriff and Violet intends to locate the killer and turn him in.
Violet-s friendship with Jay is so close that he feels intensely protective of her, yet he hesitantly agrees to help her locate the killer. Violet finds herself wishing that Jay-s intentions are for them to be more than just friends and as she begins to fall desperately in love with him, she closes in on the killer. Dangerously for the young couple, the serial killer turns out to be a cunning and crafty executioner. Violet just might be his next victim.
